This document for inspectors was first commissioned by the National Care Standards Commission (NCSC), which is now part of the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The guidelines indicate the range of initial knowledge about autism needed by inspectors. It also tells inspectors where to find further information and what skills they need to build on this knowledge-base. Areas covered include:

  • incidence/prevalence/diagnosis
  • support and interventions
  • common approaches with adults
  • staff training
  • care plans
  • flexibility of provision.
